Beautiful car! I've seen many 275 GTBs on the road and a few 330 GTSs but never a 275 GTS. Great find. This was back when Ferraris were still classy.

(AP) ? In a surprise jailhouse interview just hours after a jury began deliberating her fate, Jodi Arias spoke out Tuesday about her murder trial, her many fights with her legal team and her belief that she "deserves a second chance at freedom someday."

Arias spoke to The Associated Press as part of a series of interviews with media outlets. She repeated many of her claims from previous interviews, testimony on the witness stand and her statements to the jury earlier Tuesday as she pleaded for mercy.

But she provided some new information about her case and how she believed her lawyers let her down by not calling more witnesses who could have bolstered her claims that she was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Travis Alexander.

Arias was convicted last week of first-degree murder in the June 2008 stabbing and shooting death of her one-time lover in what prosecutors described as a cold, calculated killing carried out in a jealous rage. Arias has maintained all along it was self-defense.

The jury began deliberating Tuesday as they worked to determine whether she should live or die for her crime. If the jury opts for a life sentence, the judge will have the option of determining whether she spends the rest of her days behind bars or is eligible for release after 25 years. Arias acknowledged it was unlikely she would ever be released, but believed she deserves a second chance.

Following her conviction last week, she told a local TV station that she preferred the death penalty. She said Tuesday night that she changed her mind after a tearful meeting with family members that same day, realizing that her death would only cause them more pain.

"I felt like by asking for death, it's like asking for assisted suicide and I didn't want to do that to my family," she told the AP.

Arias said she fought from the beginning to keep cameras out of the courtroom to limit the media spectacle, and believes that the jury should have been sequestered. She stated flatly that she did not receive a fair trial.

"The prosecutor has accused me of wanting to be famous, which is not true," she said.

However, Arias has sought the spotlight at every turn, providing TV interviews and even using a third-party to tweet throughout the trial.

Arias repeated her claims that she never wanted to go to trial in the first place but instead wanted to reach a deal with prosecutors on a second-degree murder count that would have carried a maximum of 22 years in prison. However, she said, "no deal was offered."

She gave the interviews Tuesday after the judge lifted an order barring jail officials from arranging any media requests. The judge did not elaborate on the reason for the ruling, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office quickly began making the media arrangements that lasted late into the night.

A shackled Arias wore makeup for the interviews and showed up in a jail classroom with a comb in hand as she fixed her hair for the cameras. When pressed for details on some of her conflicting stories, she was mostly evasive, citing advice from her attorneys and possible pending appeals.

She was also asked about the conflicts she had had with her two court-appointed lawyers, Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott.

Arias said she wanted at least three people called as witnesses who could have testified to having seen bruises on her neck "when I was choked out" by Alexander but she said she was rebuffed by her lawyers. The prosecutor insisted her claims of self-defense were an exaggerated attempt to avoid being convicted.

She said her lawyers "felt a little betrayed" and blindsided by her post-conviction interview but that they gave their blessings for Tuesday night's interviews, warning her to be cautious.

Arias said she sometimes wishes she'd never met Alexander, "just because of how ultimately everything ended and I say that for his sake and mine ? not just a selfish thing."

She said if the attack never occurred and she never crossed paths with the victim, she would likely now be a happily married 32-year-old with children, good finances and a successful wedding photography business.

Earlier Tuesday, Arias told jurors she planned to use her time in prison to bring about positive changes, including donating her hair to be made into wigs for cancer victims, helping establish prison recycling programs and designing T-shirts to raise money for domestic abuse victims.

Arias became emotional as she displayed for jurors photos of her friends, boyfriends and family members, including newborn relatives she has met only from behind bars.

She asked jurors to reject the death penalty for the sake of her family.

"I'm asking you to please, please don't do that to them. I've already hurt them so badly, along with so many other people," she said. "I want everyone's healing to begin, and I want everyone's pain to stop."

Arias stabbed and slashed Alexander nearly 30 times, shot in him in the forehead and slit his throat, nearly decapitating him, before leaving his body in his shower to be found by friends about five days later.

"To this day, I can hardly believe I was capable of such violence. But I know that I was," Arias told jurors. "And for that, I'm going to be sorry for the rest of my life."

Her speech to jurors came a day after her attorneys asked to be removed from the case, saying the five-month trial had become a witch hunt that prompted death threats against a key witness in the penalty phase. They also argued for a mistrial. The judge denied both requests.

Alexander's family showed little emotion as Arias' mother, father and sister looked on from the other side of the gallery and cried.

After Arias finished speaking, Judge Sherry Stephens explained to jurors that their finding would be final.

The jury heard closing arguments later Tuesday, with Willmott citing Arias' mental health problems and lack of a criminal record among the reasons to spare her life.

"The question now before you is: Do you kill her? Do you kill her for the one act that she did, the one horrible act, or can you see that there is a reason to let her live? Can you see that there is value in her life?" she said.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez said that despite Arias' claims, there were no factors in the case that would warrant a sentence other than death.

He implored jurors to look at the "whole panorama" of the case, not just Arias' statement Tuesday, and explained how Alexander's family will live with the pain of their loss for the rest of their lives.

"They can't forget that what happened on that afternoon, Travis Victor Alexander suffered immense physical pain," Martinez said. "They can't forget that."

Netflix will air new Ricky Gervais series in September

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Ricky Gervais' "Derek," a new Netflix series from the creator and star of "The Office" and 'Extras," will premiere on Netflix September 12. Netflix will release all seven episodes at once, the same approach it has taken with its latest original series "House of Cards" and "Hemlock Grove."

Gervais wrote and directed the show, which he also stars in as the title character. Derek is a sweet, selfless but meek man who works in a retirement home alongside Dougie (Karl Pilkington) and Hannah (Kerry Godliman). The show will be available in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Latin America, Brazil and the Nordics.

It will not be available in the U.K., where the show already premiered on Channel 4 and will return for a second season.

"Ricky Gervais is one of the most distinctive comedy voices of his generation," Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, said in a statement. "With ?Derek,' Ricky takes on new territory and mixes comedy with drama that is sometimes touching and sometimes heartbreaking."

Neflix's next splashy original title is its reboot of "Arrested Development," which debuts May 26.

I'm new to C++ and I'm not sure which file I code in. I thought it would be the cpp file but the h file says the class name and looks like where I should code. Just to get it started I need to initialize a Date object in the default constructor. Any help would be great.

    Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I have this in the .cpp file:

#include "Date.h" #include <string> #include <iostream> using namespace std;   Date::Date(string date) 	:newDate(date) { 	date = "Jan 1, 2000"; }  Date::Date(int month, int day, int year) 	:newMonth(month) 	newDay(day) 	newYear(year)  {  }  Date::~Date(void) { }

This is my .h file:  #pragma once #include <iostream> #include <string>  class Date { public: 	explicit Date(std::string date);   private: 	std::string newDate; 	 	~Date(void); };

The default constructor is ti create a date object at Jan, 1 2000. The second constructor is to take three arguments (month, day, year) that initializes the Date object to the parameter values. Is this on the right track?

First, I'll tell you what future employers and teachers want to see: Unless you are writing a template class, keep the declaration of the class in the header file, and put all the implementation in your .cpp file. If it is a relatively simple template class, you can have your code mixed in with the class declaration. If it's a complex template class, then again keep the declaration in the header file, but have the implementation in a .inc file which is included by the header.

Unfortunately, after being exposed to C#, I don't practice what I preached above, because I hate having to retype function parameters twice. Instead of following the strict separation of declaration and implementation, I usually determine whether the class I am writing needs to be exposed to other compile units. If the answer is yes, then of course the declaration goes into the header file and the implementation will go into a .cpp file. If the class is actually only used locally within the compile unit and not shared outside of it, then I mix in the implementation with the class declaration in my .cpp file.

Usually when a Date class is designed the day, month and year are held as integer variables. The second constructor's parameters suggests that this is your instructor's intention.

The term default constructor is often used to refer to a parameter-less constructor.

So your first constructor function has a string parameter and therefore incorrect.

The episode that aired in 1973 was filmed at Kings Island. The episode entitled "The Cincinnati Kids" involved the family visiting Kings Island so dad Mike Brady (Robert Reed) can present his architectural plans for a new addition to the park.

The three actors entertained park guests during four shows of singing, dancing and anecdotes from the show that ran from 1969 to 1974. They also met fans and sign autographs.

USA Today reported that Barry Williams (Greg Brady) was the unofficial host of the shows Sunday.

?He came out first and introduced the others. He talked about the clips, and he did a little Johnny Bravo. And in truth, Williams remains quite groovy. His skin is tan, his hair is dark, and his pants still fit just right.

And everybody loved it. At the first of four shows Sunday, there was not an empty seat in the 844-seat venue. People who couldn't get into the first show were given wristbands for the second. There were already enough to fill the place for all four shows.

"I think everybody, at some point in their life, wanted to be a Brady," Williamson said, sounding quite reasonable. "Their whole family seemed so perfect. They were so nice. I think it resonates with the child in all of us to want to be Brady."

AT&T Is Finally Going to Let Everyone Video Chat Over Data

AT&T has caught a lot of flak for being excruciatingly picky about what apps can do video chat over data on what kind of plans. It's been equal parts annoying and confusing for everyone involved. But now, the carrier is about to simplify it by letting everyone do everything by the end of this year. Finally.

The provider put it this way in a statement:

For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps. And by mid-June, we?ll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers.

Throughout the second half of this year, we plan to enable pre-loaded video chat apps over cellular for all our customers, regardless of data plan or device; that work is expected to be complete by year end.

Today, all of our customers can use any mobile video chat app that they download from the Internet, such as Skype.

Until now, users who wanted to use video-chat applications that come pre-installed on their phones (like FaceTime and recently Hangouts) over data have had to be on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. And while Wi-Fi was the only option for folks holding unlimited plans that had been grandfathered in, until AT&T eventually threw them a 3G bone. Fucntionality has been rolling out slowly, but the whole process has just been absurdly complex.

This new update won't be rolling out until the second half of this year, but it should finally clear up all the weirdness for everyone and make video chatting over a cell network something that doesn't require you to consult a spreadsheet first. You can just do it, instead. It's about time. [The Verge]

Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Week

ap obama baltimore 01 mi 130517 wblog Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Weekobama

After a week filled with political scandals, President Obama turned to promoting his jobs tour in his weekly address Saturday.

"That's why I like getting out of the Washington echo chamber whenever I can - because too often, our politics aren't focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday.

"I'm going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities. Because I know that if we come together around creating more jobs, educating more of our kids, and building new ladders of opportunity for everyone who's willing to climb them - we'll all prosper, together," he said.

The president traveled to Baltimore, Md. Friday on his second stop for the "Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour." He spoke at a dredging company, visited with children at an elementary school, and stopped at a community center focused on helping fathers and families.

Obama's trip came as he tried to pivot attention back to his second term agenda as a series of political scandals involving the IRS, Benghazi, and the Department of Justice dominated much of the week.

But while the president attempted to divert attention from the political scandals of the week, Republicans used the incidents as a rallying call to repeal the healthcare law.

"Now: just think about the fact that it's the IRS that will be responsible for enforcing many of these regulations. If we've learned anything this week, it's that the IRS needs less power, not more'" Rep. Andy Harris, R-MD, said in the GOP weekly address, "As a matter of fact, it turns out that the IRS official who oversaw the operation that's under scrutiny for targeting conservatives is now in charge of the IRS's ObamaCare office. You can't make this stuff up."

"Well here's the problem: the train wreck is already here. ObamaCare is knocking Americans off the ladder of opportunity, and the sooner we repeal it, the sooner we can start fixing health care for working families," he said.

Buddhism won't be harmed by ex-drag queen - The Nation

Home ? opinion ? Buddhism won't be harmed by ex-drag queen

    editorial

    The Nation May 18, 2013 1:00 am

One key argument against the decision by a former Miss Tiffany to become a monk is that he may be doing so to escape personal problems or send someone a statement. In other words, he may not be seeking the kind of spiritual peace that those seeking ordination are supposed to. Religion, critics of Sorrawee "Jazz" Nattee say, is neither a hiding place nor a means of revenge.

Sorrawee, who never underwent gender reassignment, was quietly ordained recently after having his silicone breast implants removed, only for the fact to emerge as headline news in the Thai-language media.

The criticism levelled at him might have greater weight in a society where monks are not caught drunk or sleeping with women on a regular basis. The truth is that the Thai monkhood is far from being a pure sanctuary, and there are monks whose conduct deserves more scrutiny than Sorrawee's.

More truth is that Sorrawee is simply exercising his religious freedom. It is irrelevant that he was crowned Miss Tiffany in 2009, dressed in women's clothes. Buddhist history has examples of monks with more controversial backgrounds. Among them was one well-known Angulimala, a killer who was redeemed by his conversion to Buddhism.

Sorrawee had been frequenting temples before his decision. He also consulted many people before deciding to be ordained. It was clearly not a knee-jerk decision made in the heat of the moment. And even if it had been, why should we blame him? One way or another, people turn to religion because they believe they are facing problems that cannot be resolved in the lay world.

Some have predicted that Sorrawee's time in the monkhood will be short-lived - a quick in-and-out way of seeking religious solace. They say Sorrawee will be out of the monkhood in no time if the worldly situation that drove him there in the first place suddenly improves. Again, even if that turns out to be the case, religious freedom tells us that he has every right to try the spiritual peace of Buddhism. This religion is supposed to offer comfort during hard times and does not hold anyone in a firm grip. It's fine if you want to spend the rest of your life in a Buddhist sanctuary, but it's also fine if you just want to give it a try.

That women can only become "nuns", not monks, has been a focus of criticism where Buddhism is concerned. This must continue to be an issue that invokes constant debate and open-minded analyses. But by and large, Buddhism is generous, compassionate and encourages questioning.

Buddhism has not been free from exploitation. There have been sects or cults that preach that, the greater your religious donations - meaning money - the greater your chance of going to "Heaven". True students of Buddhism know within their hearts, however, that such teaching is not the religion's true essence.

If there are threats that might undermine Buddhism as Thailand's main religion, then they are represented by this kind of wayward teaching, not people like Sorrawee becoming monks. He, in the saffron robe, only represents the religion's openness and ability to offer peace and comfort. Whether he will "succeed" or "fail" will be of his own accord. No misguided "principles" will emerge to influence him while he is in the monkhood.

Despite the undeniable flaws of the Thai monkhood in general, Buddhism's real essence has been unwavering since the day the Lord Buddha proclaimed the religion. If Sorrawee really devotes himself to Buddhist study as a monk, he will find that many things that he takes as his are not really his. He will be able to look back at his time as Miss Tiffany with a new perspective. He will learn that the memory of it is part of his journey and is nothing to be ashamed of.

That is the charm of Buddhism. No matter who you are, where you come from or what you have done in the past, the door to the "try-out" room is always open, and you can check out any time if you don't like it. All you need is the sincere will to look inside.

Non-surgical treatments for multiple tumors move one step nearer

A study led by researchers from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry has for the first time revealed how the loss of a particular tumour suppressing protein leads to the abnormal growth of tumours of the brain and nervous system.

The study is published in Brain: A Journal of Neurology.

Tumour suppressors exist in cells to prevent abnormal cell division in our bodies. The loss of a tumour suppressor called Merlin leads to tumours in many cell types within our nervous systems. There are two copies of a tumour suppressor, one on each chromosome that we inherit from our parents. The loss of Merlin can be caused by random loss of both copies in a single cell, causing sporadic tumours, or by inheriting one abnormal copy and losing the second copy throughout our lifetime as is seen in the inherited condition of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).

With either sporadic loss or inherited NF2, these tumours lacking the Merlin protein develop in the Schwann cells that form the sheaths that surround and electrically insulate neurons. These tumours are called schwannomas, but tumours can also arise in the cells that form the membrane around the brain and spinal cord, and the cells that line the ventricles of the brain.

Although the schwannomas are slow-growing and benign, they are frequent and come in numbers. The sheer number of tumours caused by this gene defect can overwhelm a patient, often leading to hearing loss, disability and eventually death. Patients can suffer from 20 to 30 tumours at any one time, and the condition typically manifests in the teenage years and through into adulthood.

No effective therapy for these tumours exists, other than repeated invasive surgery or radiotherapy aiming at a single tumour at a time and which is unlikely to eradicate the full extent of the tumours.

The Brain study investigated how loss of a protein called Sox10 functions in causing these tumours. Sox10 is known to play a major role in the development of Schwann cells, but this is the first time it has been shown to be involved in the growth of schwannoma tumour cells. By understanding the mechanism, the research team has opened the way for new therapies to be developed that will provide a viable to alternative to surgery or radiotherapy.

The study, undertaken by researchers from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry with colleagues from the State University of New York and Universitat Erlangen-Nurmberg, was led by Professor David Parkinson.

He said: "We have for the first time shown that human schwannoma cells have reduced expression of Sox10 protein and messenger RNA. By identifying this correlation and gaining an understanding of the mechanism of this process, we hope that drug-based therapies may in time be created and introduced that will reduce or negate the need for multiple surgery or radiotherapy."

Beyond the reach of banks, Indians targeted by outlaw fund scams

By Swati Pandey and Sujoy Dhar

MUMBAI/KOLKATA (Reuters) - Dalia Ghosh, a 28-year-old nurse in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, invested her savings in an unlicensed fund run by media conglomerate Saradha Group last year, hoping to start her own clothes business.

But Saradha went bust in April, wiping out as much as $3.7 billion in deposits from mostly low-income Indians, miring West Bengal's state government in scandal, and illustrating the risks faced by the millions who live outside the banking system.

Saradha, which until April had at least two high-profile members of parliament on its payroll, lost money in bad investments, and on paying steep commissions to its agents, government officials said.

"We trusted them like fools because the return they assured was four times more than a nationalized bank," said Ghosh, who says she lost 100,000 rupees ($1,800) in the collapse of Saradha, believing it to be a government-approved fund.

Until it fell apart, Saradha was a powerful outfit in parts of India with holdings in real estate and media, including several newspapers and TV channels seen by many as the voice of Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal.

That media business has dissolved, and Banerjee is at war with what remains of Saradha.

Saradha ran one of the thousands of unlicensed financial schemes in India, many of which thrive below the regulatory radar with the protection of local politicians, economists say.

Lack of education and the absence of bank branches across huge swathes of the country puts more than half of India's population outside the formal banking sector.

Duvvuri Subbarao, head of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), worries about the number of unregulated investment and savings schemes, but says the central bank alone cannot stamp them out.

"Curbing all this will need investigation, will need enforcement of law, but more importantly ... we must provide access to the formal financial system for a large segment of the population which do not have access now," he said.

The distinction between licensed and unlicensed financial services firms is lost on millions of Indians, many of whom have never stepped inside a bank branch.

"The basic problem is a lot of these para-banking models are based on Ponzi schemes," said Abheek Barua, chief economist at HDFC Bank Ltd, referring to a type of pyramid selling where returns are taken from money coming in from new joiners.

"Unless we have very aggressive bank penetration, these para-banking models will always have allure."

India has 10.6 bank branches for every 100,000 adults, compared with about 35 in the United States, according to the World Bank, while only 12 percent of adults said they had saved money at a formal financial institution in the past year.

Assets at non-bank finance companies in India have increased 20 percent annually for the past five years - faster than at banks - and stand at over $670 billion, a November report by the Switzerland-based Financial Stability Board said.

Saradha took its slice of this cash by operating under the guise of a credit association, according to India's market regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Such credit associations are known locally as a chit fund, legal in India if they are state-registered.

Conventionally, members of a chit fund pool money which is deposited in a regulated bank, and each month the winner of a big payout is selected at random.

Instead, Saradha used savers' money to buy into property and broadcasting businesses, government officials said.

    ENFORCEMENT

SEBI began an investigation into the group in April 2010 after a government body brought Saradha's unregistered "collective investment scheme" to its attention.

Saradha denied it was running a fund, but in April this year SEBI ordered it to wind up the scheme as it was unlicensed, and refund investors' money within three months.

Saradha's chief Sudipta Sen is now under arrest and West Bengal police are trying to track down the missing money. Before police picked him up Sen wrote a letter - later seen by Reuters - saying he had been "blackmailed" by senior leaders of Banerjee's Trinamool Congress party into paying bribes to them.

Banerjee denies those allegations. Sen and his aide Debjani Mukherjee, a director of Saradha, could not be contacted as they are in police custody.

Banerjee, whose party pulled out of the national ruling coalition last year, promised to raise money to refund investors by increasing the state tax on cigarettes. "Smoke a little more to help the investors," she told local newspapers, though taxes have not changed.

Ghosh, who had been saving 6,000 rupees a month with Saradha, says she has no hope of getting her money back. "Some say I paid the price for my greed and for trusting a chit fund company," she said.

She may be part of a growing list of victims. Real estate company Rose Valley, endorsed by Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, is being probed by SEBI and government agencies on suspicion of selling without having filed an application to do so.

Rose Valley says its operations are legal, but some in the industry worry that ineffective regulation raises the risk of losses.

"Banks are not present in all the areas. So, you give 15-18 percent interest rate and poor people will get attracted," said T.S Sivaramakrishnan, General Secretary of the All India Association of Chit Funds.

"If you ask me whether chit funds are foolproof, honestly I would say no. There are laws but who is there to implement them?" ($1 = 54.1275 Indian rupees)

How the Scandals Turned Obama Into a Dour Scold

Even from 2,300 miles away and across the ideological gap that separates him from President Obama, Republican Ken Khachigian can recognize the signs and even feel a little empathy for the Democratic incumbent at perhaps the lowest point of his presidency. Khachigian was there at the White House from 1970 to 1974 to watch another president cope with scandal.

?You feel besieged. You feel defensive, especially when things are coming in from all directions,? he told NationalJournal from his Southern California home, recalling his days watching President Nixon deal with Watergate. ?You do feel embattled. And it can distort, to some extent, your perception and your ability to get things done.?

Watergate, of course, stands alone in the pantheon of presidential scandals. Despite the tendency of the opposition party to hype any presidential hiccup over the past four decades as ?bigger than Watergate,? there really is only one Watergate. The comparisons this time are just as bogus as when Democrats similarly tried to elevate the Iran-Contra scandal. But there is one way in which modern-day imbroglios can almost top Watergate. That is the pressure. In 1974, we had no cable news, no Internet, and little in the way of political talk radio. ?It?s even more difficult today, because today you?ve got 24/7, nonstop media, and the blogosphere and Twitter,? Khachigian said. ?Today, there is no break. It?s just incessant.?

That ubiquitous scrutiny makes it even more important that a president remain resolute and clear-eyed about his mission. It is critical that he look bigger than his critics. And, as is always the case in politics, that he project optimism about his leadership.

It is in that regard that Obama has faltered in the days since the story of the misdeeds at the IRS broke, cranking up the political and media intensity. One can argue whether the White House was too slow to respond and stanch the bleeding. In some ways, that is a question for lawyers, who can debate how cautious a president must be in responding to such allegations. But it is hard to disagree that this president has lost his footing in the way he presents himself.

Optimism is a vastly underrated component of a successful presidency. Voters tend to reject presidents who are dour or who talk of malaise. They reward those like Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, who offer hope and grand promises. Obama must know this. It was in many ways the basis of his improbable campaign success in 2008. And even today, beset by controversies and investigations, he pays it rhetorical service. But the message is decidedly mixed.

This week, he fled briefly to New York City and friendly audiences of Democratic donors. There, he spoke glowingly of the resilience and spirit he saw in Boston and in West, Texas, after the tragedies there. ?I?ve probably never been more optimistic about America,? he declared. But, more tellingly, he painted a depressing picture of the state of affairs in Washington and the state of his own presidency. ?I sure want to do some governing,? Obama said, almost pitiably. ?I want to get some stuff done. I don?t have a lot of time. I?ve got three and a half years left, and it goes by like that.?

And he wasn?t shy about placing the fault on others. ?The dynamic on the other side of the aisle right now runs contrary to what we need in order to succeed. They?ve got a different point of view right now, reinforced by some folks around the country that don?t share our vision for America.? At a separate speech to big-name donors there, he was even more specific, leaving no doubt that Rush Limbaugh and other radio talkers deserve blame for his presidential failings.

Obama admitted that his theory about what would follow from his reelection was wrong. He thought the vote would cure Republicans of what he sees as their knee-jerk opposition to anything he proposed, once the prospect of ousting him from office was gone. ?My thinking was when we beat them in 2012, that might break the fever,? he said. ?And it?s not quite broken yet.? (He made the same mistake out of the gate in 2009.) Taking aim at his biggest tormentor on the airwaves, the president added, ?I genuinely believe there are Republicans out there who would like to work with us, but they?re fearful of their base and they?re concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them.?

He delivered a similar message the day before to Ohio State University graduates, warning them of the ?voices that do their best to gum up the works.? It is a message that suggests almost a weary defeatism in a White House only four months removed from a hopeful Inauguration Day. Even amid scandal, controversy, and investigations, it is the wrong approach for a president first elected on the strength of his inspirational ?Yes, we can? message.

?It is a mistake for him to say how tough it is to get anything done in Washington, and how his critics and enemies are out to sabotage anything he wants,? says veteran political analyst William Schneider, who is with the moderate Democratic group Third Way. ?There is truth in it, but he would do best not to talk about it.? Every president, Schneider noted, hits a low point. ?Things look like they are falling apart in Washington, and the president looks trapped. That comes with the job. You can?t control events.?

But a successful president has to appear in control of events, or at least on top of them. If people think their president has lost that control, they get frightened. And if Obama lets that perception take hold, he may look back on this week with a deep regret, and perhaps an abiding sense of a moment lost.
