I have been thinking about this post for a while but didn?t know where to take it until Crystal became my unlikely muse. In her post announcing the newest member of team Crystal-For-Hire she mentions,

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? NASCAR's premier event, the season-opening Daytona 500, is being delayed by rain.

Heavy showers drenched the famed speedway Sunday afternoon, sending fans scattering for cover and leaving everyone in wait-and-see mode.

Radar shows little relief in sight, too.

"It's one of those days here in Daytona where it pops up and falls off and pops up and falls off," NASCAR president Mike Helton said. "But as the day progresses, we think the chances of the pop-ups diminish quite a bit. Hopefully this will be the last big cell we see and things will start falling apart and we can get the track dry and go on and get finish and run the Daytona 500 today."

NASCAR officials pushed back the start of the race shortly before the green flag was scheduled to drop.

They intend to wait as long as possible in hopes of getting the 500-mile race in Sunday. NASCAR says Fox is committed to broadcast the event, even it means going head to head with the NBA All-Star game and the Oscars.

It doesn't look like the Daytona 500 will begin any time soon, though.

The track takes about two and a half hours to dry, but the process can't be started until it stops raining. No Daytona 500 has ever been postponed.

"We are equipped," Helton said. "The Daytona International Speedway has every drying piece of machinery they got across the country here today, because we know that the fans at home and the fans here in Daytona want to see the race run. We do, too. The sooner, the better."

The forecast calls for intermittent showers most of the afternoon, and even worse weather is on tap for Monday.

"I got a feeling this is going to be a long day," driver David Ragan wrote on his Twitter feed. "I really feel bad for the fans that are soaking wet. I am going to make a grocery store run."

NASCAR went ahead with driver introductions and the national anthem, so once the track is dry, racing can commence.

New York's mayor offered a robust defense Friday of a secret police department effort to monitor mosques and Muslim businesses and student groups in several states, following a week of criticism from college administrators and politicians who said the intelligence-gathering pried too deeply into the lives of law-abiding people.

"We just cannot let our guard down again," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Speaking on his weekly radio show on WOR-AM, Bloomberg declined to discuss details of the anti-terrorism programs, detailed in a series of stories by The Associated Press. But he said the intelligence-gathering was "legal," ''appropriate" and "constitutional."

It was a more vigorous defense of the police department ? and a more dire picture of the dangers faced by the city ? than he offered just days ago, before the criticism intensified.

Bloomberg said the efforts were vital to protect the city, which took the brunt of the 9/11 attacks and also witnessed the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

"We are not going to repeat the mistakes that we made after the 1993 bombing," he said. "We just cannot let our guard down again. We cannot slack in our vigilance. The threat was real. The threat is real. The threat is not going away."

As he has previously, the mayor denied that the department's monitoring of Muslims not suspected of any crime amounted to spying. "We don't target individuals based on race and religion," he said.

More criticism came from public officials in New Jersey after another AP report detailed a secret effort by the NYPD to photograph every mosque in Newark and catalog Muslim businesses.

Officials in three states have traded accusations over who knew what about such NYPD programs.

Critics have said it isn't appropriate for the police to spy on law-abiding citizens without reason to believe they have committed a crime. Newark Mayor Corey Booker was among several New Jersey officials who said they were surprised and concerned to learn that the NYPD had broadly monitored Muslims and mosques in that state.

Bloomberg has been unapologetic about the police department's efforts, and he said again Friday that the NYPD would continue to do "everything that the law permits us to do" to detect terrorists operating in the U.S. before they have a chance to act, even if those activities turn out to be unpopular.

"This is not a joke. This is not a political statement, a political football to play with," he said.

96% Pariah

"Pariah," from first-time writer/director Dee Rees, doesn't break much artistic ground. It tells the same gay/lesbian coming-out story that we've seen a million times. But it's told particularly well and from within a black urban context, which I don't believe has been done before. It also goes a bit deeper into the hearts and minds of the homophobic parents than typically is done, which was great. Unfortunately, it only scratches those surfaces. Kim Wayans, who of course has a long history in comedy, shows she has major dramatic talent, playing the homophobic mother of the main character. The cast is universally good, but Wayans is the stand-out. The main character is a black teenage girl in Brooklyn going through the coming-out process. She has fully come out to herself as a lesbian, and she has even found her way into a lesbian circle of friends. She even frequents a women's night club. But she hasn't told Mom or Dad about any of this, both of whom are homophobic. Mom is particularly venomous in her hatred of gays and lesbians. You can see that Dad, a detective in the NYPD, in his heart of hearts is not a bigot. Thrown into the mix to complicate things a little bit is a bisexual girl eager to have lesbian experiences to explore herself. But she tosses lesbians aside like useless candy wrappers after she's had her fun. If I were going to give Dee Rees advice, I would say this: Ms. Rees, in "Pariah" you started digging into the parent characters with some real psychological and artistic depth. I encourage you to go more deeply in that direction. I think your true gifts as an artist lie there. I would give anything to see a sequel where you explore what happened to that mother and what she's really fighting. You hint that her husband is beginning to stray, but I think there's more in there. Help us see it. Remember when that great schoolteacher tells Alike that she could "go deeper" with her poetry? You could go deeper with your films. I know you could.

Obama shift on birth control seeks to placate Catholics (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? President Barack Obama, in an abrupt policy shift aimed at quelling an election-year firestorm, announced on Friday that religious employers would not be required to offer free birth control to workers and that the onus would instead be put on insurers.

The compromise sought to accommodate religious organizations, such as Catholic hospitals and universities, outraged by a new rule that would have required them to offer free contraceptive coverage.

Instead, the new approach puts the burden on insurance companies, ordering them to provide workers at religious-affiliated institutions with free family planning if they request it, without involving their employer at all, the White House said.

"Religious organizations won't have to pay for these services," Obama told reporters in the White House briefing room. "But women who work at these institutions will have access to free contraceptive services."

He insisted the revised policy, which came after he ordered aides to speed up their review of the controversial new rule, would ensure "religious liberty" while protecting women's health.

Weighing in publically on the issue for the first time, Obama acknowledged that religious groups had "genuine concerns" about the birth control rule but he accused some people of a cynical effort to turn the issue into a "political football."

The rule had sparked an outcry from Catholic Church leaders, Republicans and other social conservatives who denounced it as an attack on religious freedom.

The policy shift is aimed at defusing the controversy and preventing it from becoming a liability for Obama's re-election campaign, while at the same time trying not to anger his liberal base. But it was unlikely to assuage all of the concerns of church leaders.

The regulation at the center of the controversy requires religious-affiliated groups such as charities, hospitals and universities, but not churches themselves, to provide employees coverage for birth control as other health insurance providers must do. The Catholic Church opposes most methods of birth control.

Low property appraisals can occur in any real estate market.? In a rising market, multiple offers can create a final contract price higher than current comparable properties.? In a declining market, appraisal values may not come in at value.? Both buyer and seller want the home to appraise for the negotiated price, but sometimes it doesn?t.? What can a buyer or seller do if a property doesn?t appraise at or above the negotiated purchase price?

1.? The buyer can bring in additional cash to make up the difference between appraised value and contract value.

2.? The buyer and seller can re-negotiate the contract price down to the appraised value price.

3.? The seller can hold true to the purchase contract price and possibly carry a 2nd note for the difference between the appraised value and purchase contract value.

4.? The lender could order a second appraisal that might come in at value and/or request to appeal the original appraisal.? The appeal could be based on the appraiser using wrong or outdated comparable properties,? the appraiser?s lack of knowledge of the community (comparing two homes from different school systems etc.) or the appraiser using incorrect information about the home (i.e. size, age amenities etc).

5.? The buyer can kill the loan with the original lender and start fresh with a new loan and subsequently new appraisal.? The seller must agree, this will take time and it might not yield different results.? If there are questions about a property?s ability to appraise, one might double app with two lenders so you have a back-up in place should the first lender (do to low appraisal) not be able to perform.

6.? Both parties can agree to cancel the transaction.

Since 1994, I have seen almost all of these strategies in reaction to a low appraisal value used.? Renegotiating the purchase price and/or having the buyer bring in more cash seem to be most frequently used strategy for keeping the deal together. However, it really depends on the buyer, seller and real estate agents having a meeting of the mind to make it work.

Generally, your homeowners insurance won?t cover flood damage, but it would cover water damage. While the world of water damage can be a tricky one, the time to understand your policy options is not when your pipes burst or a leaky dishwasher creates a lake in your kitchen.

There are basically two insurance policies that deal with water damage-- a flood insurance policy and a homeowner?s insurance policy. Losses not covered by one of these policies may be covered by the other. Homeowners are required to carry homeowners insurance, but are not required to purchase an additional policy specifically for flood damage. Many homeowners do not purchase flood insurance unless they live in a flood-prone geographic area, but understanding what your coverage limits are may save you headaches when the raindrops start falling.

Homeowners Insurance: Your homeowner's insurance policy does not provide coverage for floods, but it does provide coverage for other types of water damage to your home such as:

1. A hailstorm smashes your window, resulting in a rainstorm in the bedroom.
2. A heavy rain soaks through the roof and drips into your ceiling.
3. A broken water pipe spews water into your home. Note that a slow leaking pipe or neglected frozen pipes might not be
covered if the homeowner has been irresponsible.?
4. Water leaks from your backyard pool into your basement
5. Dishwasher or washing machine overflows, causing a flood.

The golden rule when wondering if homeowners covers a specific water hazard is to determine if the water first hit the ground, before damaging your home. If it hit the ground first, you?re most likely not covered. ?

Flood Insurance: The dictionary defines "flood" as a rising and overflowing of a body of water onto normally dry land. Therefore, flood damage is caused by water that has been on the ground at some point before damaging your home. Here are a few examples of situations that would be covered by flood insurance, but not covered by your typical homeowner policy. ?

1. A backed up sewer that floods your basement
2. Floods caused by a nearby lake or river.
3. A heavy rain causes water to seep into your floor.
4. A flash flood causes the hill behind your house cause a mud slide in your basement.

Flood damage to your home can be insured only with a flood insurance policy -- no other insurance will cover flood damage. It is important to understand that even these types of situations, your possessions (furniture, clothes, etc.) would be covered by homeowners, even if the flood damage itself is not.
